He died December 14, 1978 in Park Rapids, MN. Sam was the 3rd living child of Isak and Margaretta Yliniemi. As a young child in a horse drawn wagon he moved with his parents to Toad Lake Township, Becker County where he grew to manhood. August 2, 1911 he marred Hilda Kippola, daughter of August and Katie Kippola. Sam purchased the land south of his parents, which he cleared and farmed until his retirement. He also did logging for various logging companies until his 4th child, Ervin was born. Sam and Hilda had 14 children; 12 boys and 2 girls.
Verniel Yliniemi Latto writes about Uncle Sam: Sam to me was the most like my dad, (Joe) in looks, except he had a rounder face. There was a incident after Sam had aged, and lost weight, and my father had passed away by then. Bob, and I were in Minnesota for Julius Latto's funeral. I got out of the car, and I stood in shock, for there standing by the door of the church, was my dad. Brown suit and all. We got into the church, and I could not take my eyes off him. Here was my dad sitting side ways on the seat, so he could look and see who was coming in. Just as my dad used to do. Of course I realized who it really was. But he was so much like my dad Joe, that I could only stare. One time I remember Bob, and I brought Sam a chunk of Salmon. He was so pleased. That Christmas he gave us a gift of money. I did not want to take it, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings either. We were just glad to bring him something that he enjoyed so much. |
