During the first two years of John and Katie's marriage they lived in both Portland, OR and Shelton, WA close to the area where Grandma Yliniemi's sister and family, the Gronroos' were living. John and Katie moved to a farm a mile west of the home place. Katie lived there after his death. Reuben and Lois Yliniemi farm and live there today. Verniel Yliniemi Latto writes about Uncle John: John was a quiet man, did not say a whole lot, but he would look at me, and make some remark, and some word to tease me, and get me to grin. My father Joe Yliniemi would tell the story about John. I don't recall how, but he had gotten his neck out of place. My dad offered to put it back into place for him. But John would not let him. After a couple weeks of suffering with the neck being out of place, he let my dad put it back for him. If I recall right he said it was difficult to put into place after it had been sitting out of place for that long. --- I remember this story because when I was little Pa asked me to go upstairs, and wake the girls. (My sisters) Verniel being a good one for teasing went under the covers, and tickled one of her sisters feet. She soon learned that when someone tickles the bottom of the feet, that they kick. The kick knocked her head out of place. I remember walking down the stairs and not being able to see the stairs the right way. My dad took me by the neck, and lifted, and turned the neck so it went back into place. Pa got Oscar Yliniemi to take us to the Chiropractor! Pa was rather proud of his accomplishment. However, I could tell that the Chiropractor was more like shocked! I don't think he thought it was such a good idea. But obviously Pa had experience in doing it, and the good Lord was watching over me, because I have not had any ill effects from the incident. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- huldy Frazee MN huldy@sannes.net Sun Jan 16 19:28:36 CST 2000 I remember shen we would do harvest and John would come and let us know if it was going to rain or be a sunny day. I didn't know how he knew. When I find out that he would urinate and tell by the color, I started checking and do so to this day(always thinking of Uncle John). It is just as reliable as the weather forecasts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pat Yliniemi Ervasti Berhta Minnesota USA pattie_cake_29@hotmail.com Sun Feb 27 22:33:15 CST 2000 I remember visiting Uncle John with my dad and Katie and Rueben were outside doing chores. John had Parkinsons's disease and slept downstairs. His hands were shaky and so he asked me to do the dishes. When I was done he gave me a couple of dimes. Back then that would buy 4 nickle candy bars! |
